Painting is my way of trying to pay witness to life and the world around me, in all its extraordinary-ordinary beauty, natural patterns, and quiet, ever-changing drama. Much of my painting is "en plein air", developed from smaller sketches and studies, or in-studio still life setups. I believe direct observation informs and enlivens a painting more than is possible than painting from photographs. I am attracted to the illusion of creating a sense of space and place from colorful goo, that sense of something from nothing, that capturing of a moment in time that will pass away, as all things do. This is how I see the world.
I have always been involved in making art in one way or another. After attending art school in London, England, I pursued a path in ceramics, working at potteries in Germany, Washington, D.C., and San Rafael, California, doing both production pottery and handbuilt sculptural pieces. I had a 35 year career as an interior architect, and when I started my own business I set aside a day a week to attend painting classes. I studied with well-known painters Michael Francis, Susan Abbott, Danni Dawson, Susan Herron, Bernard Dellario, and others. There’s always a sketchbook with me when I travel, and watercolor sketching around town is a wonderful way to record and experience one’s environment, whether at home or abroad.
I currently live in Ridgewood, Queens, New York
My paintings are in a number of private collections, and have been featured in the following juried shows:
